The American Originals Fife and Drum Corps of Washington, DC are organizing
a special drum corps event to benefit the Red Cross and honor those who died
in the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11.
The event will include patriotic music from drum corps and take place on
October 6 at High Point High School in Beltsville, Maryland. Tickets are
$12; the show starts at 7:00 PM.

"Our music is the manifestation of the endless dignity, and respect, of our
nation's proud history," said John Bosworth , director of the Originals.
"Our duty is to share this powerful message with as many Americans as
possible during this difficult juncture, in the humble hope that it will
bring comfort, pride, and unity to our great nation."
The Originals have been planning the event for months as a tribute to this
year's Medal of Honor recipients, and Harvey "Barney" Barnum, Jr., who is
stepping down as the President of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society
to serve his country as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of the United States
Navy. But in light of the terrorist attacks, the meaning of the event has
been expanded to honor the victims and display patriotism as well.
"It's a situation where our country needs to gather in a way that's upbeat,"
said Georgia Graves, event organizer and American Originals drum major.
"It's important for people to come together in an environment of healing and
celebration, and what better way to do that than a drum corps show?"
Some of drum corps' heaviest hitters will step up the plate for the cause.
The Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps -- the President's corps -- will perform.
The Old Guard represents the U.S. Army and has performed for numerous
presidents. The American Originals fill in for the Old Guard on occasion
and have played for Presidents George Bush, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.
DCA corps will play, too, including the Hawthorne Caballeros Alumni Corps
from Hawthorne, NJ, the New York Skyliners Alumni Corps from New York City,
the Reilly Raiders of Pittsburgh and the Yankee Rebels of Baltimore. The
City of Washington Pipe Band rounds out the lineup.
At press time, more than 6,000 people were missing and feared dead.
"Today alumni corps, like everyone else in New York City, have been deeply
touched by these events," said Scott Yaniga, director of the Skyliners
Alumni Corps. "We are honored to be part of this important salute to
America and its heros."
"Being in the New York metropolitan area, the horrific events of September
11 hit close to home for many in our corps," said Peter Bishop, director of
the Hawthorne Caballeros Alumni. "Our thoughts are with the families and
friends of the victims."
