'BLAST!' team to launch
'
SHOCKWAVE!' production in 2002
by Chris Hollenback, DCW Editor

The team that brought Star of Indiana's "BLAST!" production to Broadway will create a new production titled "SHOCKWAVE!" in fall 2002. The theater production will be similar to "BLAST!", with no dialogue or plot, but will again pick a theme to explore. For "BLAST!", the theme was "colors."

"SHOCKWAVE!" will tour America initially, and Broadway will be a goal again.

"The designs are to end up there if all goes well," said Jim Mason, producer. "We're going to take the things we've learned on Broadway and take new music and create an entirely new show with wonderful effects. It's something we're excited about doing."

Meanwhile, the awards keep pouring in. Bernadette Peters awarded the Emmy for Best Choreography in a television program to the PBS production of "BLAST!". CBS delayed its broadcast of the program due to the terrorist attacks on America, but will air it on October 7 at 8:00 PM Eastern and Pacific time on CBS.

"BLAST!" closed on Broadway on September 23 to prepare for other engagements. Originally, the plan was to stay on Broadway into January. The cast did not perform on Wednesday, September 12 following the attacks on the World Trade Center, but returned the next day to hand in emotional performances in the final two weeks.

"We filled the theater with firemen and policemen" from the New York area, Mason said. It was "BLAST!"'s way to support the officers and rescue workers who risked their lives to save others.

"For those two hours, they didn't think about (the tragedies) at all," Mason said. '"BLAST!" made them forget for two hours. We've gotten so many kind emails. It's pretty touching."
