Navy sails to victory at
'Interservice' championship

Friday, October 5, 2001 -- Annapolis, MD . . . On a mild, misty night, the Naval Academy Midshipmen were the winners of the annual Interservice Drum and Bugle Corps Championship. But this year's championship, held at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, was not your average drum corps show.

The members of the three service academy corps have been directly affected by the terrorist attacks on September 11 and America's battle against terrorism.
"For the kids, it's really a scary thing," said Bill Smith, director of the Air Force "Flight of Sound" drum corps. "Their friends are there (at the scene of US military action) right now, or on their way there."
Jeff Weir, director of the Midshipmen, said the events of September 11 forced some changes in his corps' schedule. "We lost a week and half of rehearsal, and it took me another week to get our civilian staff allowed back on the base," said Weir. But all three corps put on spirited shows in front of an enthusiastic crowd.
