In Memoriam
Patrick Mayer, father of modern Govenaires

Patrick M. Mayer, 66, father of the modern Govenaires Drum and Bugle Corps, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato due to complications from cancer. He is survived by his children, Mike, John and Molly, all of whom marched in drum corps. Mike Mayer is the director of Chops, Inc., another Minnesota senior corps.

The Govenaires, a senior corps from St. Peter, MN, are the oldest corps in the activity, founded in 1927. Originally the St. Peter Legion Corps, the name was changed in 1956 to The Govenaires, in honor of the five governors who hailed from St. Peter.

Mayer was also the owner of a bar called Patrick's on Third in St. Peter, where corps photos and memorabilia decorate the walls.

The Mankato Free Press reported that services are at 6:30 PM Sunday at the Church of St. Peter in St. Peter. Drum corps veterans will pay tribute to Mayer at the funeral by performing You'll Never Walk Alone, What a Wonderful World, and Amazing Grace.

Burial is 10:00 AM Monday in Calvary Cemetery at St. Peter. Visitation is 3:30 to 6:30 PM Sunday at the church and continues 8:30 to 10:00 AM Monday at the church when there is a procession from the church to the cemetery for graveside services. St. Peter Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
