Talent, intensity evident at Brigadiers camp
by Christopher Atkinson, DCW Staff

With an emphasis on strength of instruction and a gritty drive to outdo even their own best expectations, the Syracuse Brigadiers seem poised this season not only to entertain but to astound. With three consecutive DCA Championships under its belt, the circuit's defending champion is a sight to behold even this early in the season.

Certainly not a group to rest on its laurels, the corps has set the bar higher every year -- this year is no exception. Judging from the difficulty of the brass charts and the drum work already in evidence, not to mention rumblings of a more challenging drill design in the works, the Brigadiers will again be a monstrous threat for a fourth-straight title come championships.

The Brigadiers had a record turnout for this first camp (January 12-13), with 80 brass present and 12 more veterans intent on returning at a later camp. There are no obvious deficiencies in any of the sections in terms of numbers or talent.

The battery numbered about 24 -- 13 snares, six tenors and five basses. For this camp, the pit numbered seven. Their beats weren't perfect, but hey, it's January.

Attendance fluctuated throughout the camp, given members' other commitments, but the numbers are impressive nonetheless. The color guard is set to join the corps at the end of April.

But this is all beside the point, for the most part. If one really wants to understand the Brigadiers this season, one need look no farther than the intensity shown in the faces of those participating in the camp this weekend...
