Boston Crusaders update uniforms, select repertoire
by Art Kellerman and Chris Hollenback, DCW Staff
The 2002 Boston Crusaders will have a fresh look to go with their new show, "You are my Star."
"The new uniform can best be described as a very similar style to the old uniforms, as they are still going to appear as a cadet style jacket with pants," said Howard Weinstein, corps director. "Jacket is still red. Pants are still black. It will just have a little more innovation to it, but will still give you the mystique of the 'Boston Crusader.'"
The theme of the show is "famous American quotes," Weinstein said, including music from "The American President," Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copeland, You are my Star (choral arrangement) and Clarinet Concerto by Artie Shaw.
It will be interesting to see how the Crusaders add their stamp to Appalachian Spring, a piece performed by more than 20 different corps on the DCI circuit alone and made famous by the 1987 World Champion Garfield Cadets. It is certainly a "famous quote" in the drum corps ranks.
"The show uses famous quotes throughout," Weinstein said, "and each movement of the show has similar quotes that are being displayed by the corps visually..."
