Santa Clara Vanguard Announces 2002 Repertoire
The Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps' 2002 show, "Sound, Shape, and Color," will feature the music of Igor Stravinsky, Howard Hanson, and Aaron Copland.
The show opens with the first movement of Stravinskys neoclassic masterpiece, Symphony in Three Movements. The symphony emphasizes traditional classical-era principles updated with modern harmonies, said Mitch Rogers, show coordinator. Similarly, the 2002 Vanguard will emphasize the traditional building blocks of drum corps visual design presented in new and exciting ways, Rogers said.
With its famous melody and lush harmonies, the second movement of Howard Hansons popular Symphony No. 2 provides the perfect respite from the driving, angular, aggressive mood of the opening production.
"Hanson might as well have been speaking of SCV," Rogers said, "when describing his 'Romantic' symphony as 'a work young in spirit, lyrical, and romantic in temperament, and simple and direct in expression.'"
A light, bouncy ostinato and faintly exotic-sounding melody signal the start of the second movement of Aaron Coplands Symphony for Organ and Orchestra. This colorful tune rises to a thundering climax before introducing the main theme and visual motif of the finale.
From its quiet beginning, the third movement of the Symphony for Organ and Orchestra grows into a tremendous and dramatic avalanche of sound and emotion, Rogers said.
