Scouts founder one of three selected for Hall of Fame 'Legacy'
by David Walter, DCW staff

He founded the Madison Scouts. If that's not the definition of legacy, what else is?

Clarence "C.H." Beebe is one of three people who will be inducted into the new Legacy Class of the Drum Corps International Hall of Fame this summer. The other two honorees are Sie Lurye, the late founder of the Chicago Royal Airs, and Salvatore Ferrera of the Cavaliers. The new class recognizes those who have been out of the activity for a generation or more -- people who may not be fresh in the minds of the current hall of fame electorate.

While Beebe died in 1968, his presence and influence are very fresh in the minds of family, friends and the thousands of young people whose lives he touched during his lifetime association with the Scouts.

"I think it's wonderful -- a great tribute," said Stan Stitgen, a 12-year member of the Scouts in the 1940s and 1950s, of the honor to be bestowed upon Beebe. "All the hundreds, thousands of kids (Beebe touched) -- every one will feel wonderful and fulfilled through this."

"I believe he is the standard against which future Legacy nominations will be measured," said Bill Howard, former member and executive director of the Scouts. "Of all the people I have known in both my professional and my drum and bugle corps lives, no one is more deserving to receive this award than C.H. Beebe..."
