< PreviousThe Madison Scouts’ “Scouts in Fantasyland” was a take on “Alice in Wonderland” and featured the charming Bonnie Howard, director Bill Howard’ daughter, as Alice. In 1972, the Des Plaines Vanguard, Garfield Cadets and Madison Scouts brought total shows to the field that were reflective of contemporary social changes. Des Plaines’ selections from Holst's “Planets” provided a total war look with Mars, Bringer of War and an emotional scene from “West Side Story” (left, Jane Boulen) depicting the “death” of the main character, Tony. The Garfield Cadets’ complex show also carried a “No More War” theme with its own a battle scene and a famous poster (below) showing photos relating to that season’s production. In 1972, the Madison Scouts told the story of the American flag’s evolution (below right, Jack Russalisi). While one of the most popular musical pieces remained of the period, Battle Hymn of the Republic, other popular music reflected the changing times, such as the soundtracks of “Hair” (Aquarius), “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Patton” and selections from the often-used “West Side Story.”In addition, we must not overlook the changing fans’ temperament from not only a love for the activity during this period, but a growing passion -- maybe even an obsession -- for the movement. As more and more corps began to tour beyond their states or regions, fans were exposed to the sights and sounds of many new drum corps they had never been able to witness in person. Consequently, hard-core fans began to travel beyond their hometowns and states to get more of this drum corps thing. This passion continues today. The next time you’re at a show, ask fans sitting around you where they’re from, their answers may surprise you.Born at the most pivotal time in drum corps history, Drum Corps World has been there to provide the latest news and information fans are looking for and, in keeping with its original pledge, “To the factual reporting of events of and about drum corps (DCW, October 15-17, 1971; Special Pre-Release Edition).”A special thank you to the following Drum Corps Planet fans for their input and insight in this look back: Elphaba, Fran Haring, Keith Hall, Regimental 1 and George Setzer. In addition, a heartfelt thanks goes to Dr. Rosalie Sward and her iconic work, “The Evolution of Musical and Visual Design,” from “ A History of Drum & Bugle Corps,” volume 1, chapter 4, published by DCW in 2002.Finally, I want to leave you with a little teaser for an article currently in the works. At the first DCI Championship, the top four corps ranked with scores: Anaheim Kingsmen (88.10), Blue Stars (87.45), Santa Clara Vanguard (87.35) and 27th Lancers (86.00). When compared with the 2017 DCI top 12, the top three 1972 corps would only place 10, 11, and 12 in 2017. Now think about this. The 2017 Blue Stars scored .488 higher than their 1972 counterpart to only earn a 10t-place finish, as opposed to the 1972 second-place finish!
