Appreciated for durability. Envied by marching bands [and corps]nationwide. The legacy of these high-end, custom-fit and flexible garments is rooted in 108 years of tradition, adding to the experience of all musicians who’ve dawned one of our uniforms.” This is a quote from the Web site of Fruhauf Uniforms, based in Wichita, KS. I’ve personally experienced the company’s products when I marched with the Sky Ryders during the 1960s, both with their feeder corps, the Jets, and the older corps, until my age-out in 1970.In fact, most of the corps that once existed in the Great Plains Drum & Bugle Corps Association had uniforms produced by Fruhauf, including the Argonne Rebels, Silver Sabers and Continental Ambassadors among others. Corps showcasing designs by the company now include the Sacramento Mandarins and The Academy. Others are looking to the company for the 2019 season.During a long weekend to visit family and friends, I was able to spend several hours with Landon, Richard and Kenny Fruhauf, experiencing a fascinating tour of their factory. Richard and Kenny are fourth generation and Richard’s son, Landon, represents the fifth generation. They proudly showed off their manufacturing plant. I was accompanied by my friend Dean Palmer who, coincidentally, joined the Jets at the same time I did in 1961 and was later drum major during my years in the Sky Ryders from 1967 to 1970. (Top, the Fruhauf welcoming lobby; above, Landon Fruhauf and Steve Vickers; right, Richard, Kenny and Landon Fruhauf)The new trend in the drum corps activity is to have a theme-specific look. Not all corps are following this concept, but the fascinating dye sublimation process is making these one-year designs easier to produce, although not necessarily less costly. On the next page are images in the factory showing the first step in the process -- producing a paper version of the pattern, in this case Wichita State University Shockers new SoundSport group (right), and a shot of the massive production floor (middle and bottom right) where the components of uniforms are assembled. The process includes two lines of machines that create embroidered emblems (below) and create the piping that adorns many designs, especially the cadet-styles that have been popular over the decades and still worn by many drum corps and marching bands. The company is a sponsor of Drum Corps International’s SoundSport and Drumline Battle events during championship week in Indianapolis and is continuing as a major supplier of traditional and contemporary designs for the marching arts.It was a pleasure finally having the opportunity to see how uniforms are designed and produced after I first wore Fruhauf designs in the 1960s with the Jets and Sky Ryders. The 108-year-old company has a proud tradition dating back to the early years of the 20th Century and the name is again being featured by some of the top corps in the drum corps movement.Thank to Dean Palmer for the photographs that accompany this feature and Richard, Landon and Kenny Fruhauf for the hospitality and tour we experienced on October 5.
