WIND15154 Santa Clara Vanguard Depends Spread.qxp_Layout 1 2/12/19 11:36 AM Page 1From Camp Randall to Lucas Oil, from the Rose Bowl to the Citrus Bowl, it’s no wonder that Yamaha is the most trusted name in the marching arts activity. Since 1984, drum and bugle corps using Yamaha have won an unmatched number of DCI titles, High Percussion awards and High Brass awards. This season, nearly fifty percent of all corps have a Yamaha instrument on the field. They know that if members can rely on their instrument, they only need to focus on the performance. Whether it be a brass or percussion instrument, a drum set or electronic keyboard, a speaker or mixer, a golf car or generator, more drum and bugle corps depend on Yamaha products than any other brand.Congratulations to Santa Clara Vanguard on their 7th DCI World Championship and their 3rd High Brass Award.Champions Depend on YamahaWIND15154 Santa Clara Vanguard Depends Spread.qxp_Layout 1 2/12/19 11:36 AM Page 2Copyright 2019 by Sights & Sounds, Inc. in the United States and Canada. Drum Corps World has reached another point in its history and one that I’m proud to have contributed to during my tenure with the publication through its various forms as a writer (October 1971-1972), editor (1973) and now owner (1974-present).The fact that it has endured for these four and a half decades has a great deal to do with the parallel existence of Drum Corps International, since both began life in October 1971 at the American Legion Uniformed Groups Congress, coincidentally in downtown Indianapolis, only two blocks from where DCI was headquartered since 2008, until several months ago.One of these days I plan to commit to “paper” (Microsoft Word) a sort of time line representing my participation in the drum and bugle corps activity over the last 58 years. It’s on my to-do list and I will share it someday with you. It’s interesting to note that, since the late 1940s, there have been about four dozen different magazines, tabloid newspapers, newsletters and booklets produced. Drum Corps World’s coverage has, so far, reported on 47 years in print and on-line. The next closest periodical was the Boston-based Drum Corps News that ran from 1961 to 1985 and Bobby BellaRosa’s Eastern Review that published from the early 1950s into the early 1980s.It has been a privilege and an honor to have taken DCW from a small tabloid to the often 100-page plus editions that now come to you electronically 17 times per year and FREE!ALL of this has been possible because of each of the companies, corps and show sponsors that have supported the publication and the staff members who have contributed content.I’m not finished yet, so keep watching! She lived a long and full life for 96 years and was my cheerleader all the years I’ve owned Drum Corps World and the ones I spent marching between 1961 and 1970.To those who mailed sympathy cards -- Kathy Bohks; Jim, Susan and Jimmy Centorino; Phyllis Buchwalder; Mark and Mary Buchwalder; Dean and Diana Palmer; Mark and Kathy Stasa; Mary Anne Conboy; Bill and Ann McGrath; Chad and Lara Zuleger; Jud Spena; Chuck Cournoyer; Joe and Ana Murray; Scott Arthofer and Brian Jones; Bernie and Jane Powers; Alex Saloutos and Greg Jewell -- thank you. Also to the 7,629 individuals who reached out on Facebook, posting almost 700 comments and “likes”. . . your thoughts and prayers touched me and are great examples of the “family” we are all a part of as we travel across the decades of drum corps involvement! n n nSteve VickersCollage by Tery LeFebvereNext >
